There’s something about Andra.
By Mumbua Nzula Nzyoka.
I first heard Andra Day’s sultry voice on an episode of the “Blacklist”, if you can imagine. I’d never heard of her before. There is something about Andra’s voice that reminds you of ‘doo-wop’, not the Lauryn Hill song, the genre, but I’ll admit the Hill song is an example. The song that got me hooked, however, was “Rise Up” from the album Cheers to the Fall. This, of course, prompted me to check out the album, and I am so glad I did! If you love soul, RnB, blues, disco and all that jazz, then you will love Andra day.
Andra’s real name is Cassandra Monique Batie, and Cheers to the Fall is her first album released in 2015. She is currently making news for her outstanding performance at the 2016 Grammys.
There is a reason Andra is such an underrated artist, and that’s because she doesn’t try to make commercial music. The problem with commercial music is that it tends to lack passion and soul. Passion and soul are all you will hear on this album. I dare say the album will appeal to lovers of soul and jazz. That is one of the main reasons I love this album so much. It isn’t trying to coerce you into buying it; it’s slowly wooing you into falling in love with its soul.
I love the album as a whole, but my favourite songs are “Goodbye Goodnight”, “Rearview”, “Rise up” and “Red Flags”. Because each song has a different message and feel, your choice will differ from mine, so feel free to tell us on Facebook what your favourite songs are from the album.
Conclusion: This album is a great therapy session. Just relax and let Andra Day soothe your problems away. (Also checkout her YouTube channel here).
