“Unleash the dark matter!” “Activate the Jovian accelerator!” “Prepare to enter the IN-skip!” An Anime with arguably some of the Best Dialogue of All Time
Space Pirate Captain Harlock is a 2013 Japanese 3D CG anime film directed by Shinji Aramaki. The emphasis of this picture is much more on post-millennial gloominess and environmental concerns, rather than the original’s sci-fi heroic feel and subject .Still, the film doesn’t seem likely to break out beyond the franchise’s core audience of fanboys drawn to tech talk, overpowered characters and videogame aesthetics.
Human has exhausted most of the resources from the Earth and 500 billion members scattered across the universe in search of new homelands. The whole colonization venture didn’t work out so well and on returning back to their planet, a massive war is waged called the Home Coming War, some hundreds of year before the plot of the film.
In the end no one is permitted back on Earth and it is left to become a planetary wildlife preserve and is made to be a symbol for worship. The Earthlings are still scattered and doomed still. An oppressive authority called the Gaia Coalition governs every aspect now.
The Deathshadow Martyr Fleet, led by Harlock was created and tasked to defend the now sacred planet (Earth). The Nibelung, a dying advanced alien race that Harlock and his friend Tochiro helped, offers there advanced technology of dark matter engines as a sign of appreciation.
Harlock’s ships were unstoppable and he successfully defended Earth from humanity’s influence, until the Gaia Sanction broke their own rules. Harlock as he felt it was a betrayal of what he believed in as well as the hypocrisy of the Gaia Sanction when it started allowing the diplomatic elite to immigrate to earth. Harlock asked the Nibelung observer and engineer of his ship to unleash dark matter upon the Earth to safeguard it from humanity.
Sadly, the gamble was made at a terrible cost the dark matter was overwhelming and it destroyed the Earth and life was no longer sustainable. Vowing to atone for his sin, Harlock is now a rogue pirate with a personal mission to turn back the hands of time.
